Author Interview – Mika Jolie

Here is the interview that I did with author Mika Jolie who is part of the “FangTastic’s Book Mixer Event! Her slots are Jan. 28th 3-6pm EASTERN! Thank you Mika for taking the time to do the interview with me and for being an apart of the event!

How long have you considered yourself an author?
Mika: I’ve always wanted to be a writer. However, I didn’t put the author label at the end of my name until The Scale was published in July through Secret Cravings Publishing.

How many books do you currently have out and please list titles per each genre?
Mika: I currently have two books out. The Scale and Need You Now. Both books are part of the Martha’s Way series.

Of all of the books that you have written which was the hardest to write for you and why?
Mika:  Both books were hard to write but for different reasons. The Scale forced me to look deep within myself and analyze some of my insecurities. Whereas, Need You Now, I chose to write about something that was very unfamiliar to me. I had to do a lot of research.

What do you find to be the most rewarding thing about being an author?
Mika: For me, it’s when I receive an email from a reader letting me know how my words touched them. I got a lot of that with The Scale and now with Need You Now. Two different stories and they have impacted readers on a different level.

If you could give your younger self a piece of advice when it comes to your author career what would it be and why?
Mika: It would definitely be for me to embrace what I love doing and pursue it.

What do you think is the one hardship that most authors face and what ways do you suggest they do to deal with it as best as possible?
Mika: Great question. I think our biggest obstacle, especially new authors is how do we stand out from everyone else. It’s a great time to write and there are so many great authors out there. It’s a difficult task to stand out. For me, I chose not to be generic. Someone told me my stories were too dark for the romance genre, too serious, but I chose to tackle current topics with a lot of sensuality because that’s real life. We have hurdles and we have sex…so why should I exclude one?

If you could have dinner with any author past or present and could only ask them one question who would it be and what would you ask them?
Mika: This is tough because I have so many. For example, I’d love to sit with Maya Angelou, Truman Capote, Nora Roberts, etc. (Laughs) Definitely a tough one, but I’d go with Anita Shreve. The first book I read from her was All he Ever Wanted and I remember saying: Wow!
My question for Anita would definitely be:  If you had to do it all over again, would you change anything in All he Ever Wanted?

If you could have your dream home built anywhere in the world where would it be and why?
Mika: (Laughs) Martha’s Vineyard of course. I just love it there. It’s the only place I can go and get sad whenever I have to come back home.

If you were to guess how you readers would describe you in three words what would they be?
Mika: Ha!  As per one reader, I’m sensual, adventurous and sporty.

Are you currently working on any other projects that you would like to share with me?
Mika: I’m working on book three and four of the Martha’s Way series. After that I want to start the Serrano series. The Serrano brothers are Lily’s brothers. They were introduced in Need You Now, which is book 2 of the Martha’s Way series. Two author friends of mine were talking about writing an anthology, so somewhere in there I will need to squeeze that in there too.
